Transforming Medical and Public Health  Services
  During  his tenure as Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. B.C. Roy spearheaded the  expansion of medical and public health services. Under his leadership, the  number of health centers in the state significantly increased from a mere 70 in  1947 to 271 with 2,762 beds by 1956. This expansion encompassed Sadar Hospital,  Subdivisional Hospitals, and specialized clinics for tuberculosis, leprosy, and  venereal diseases. Additionally, 16 National Malaria Control Units were  established to combat malaria in the region. Notably, West Bengal boasted the  highest number of hospital beds per 1000 population in India at that time.
  Calcutta`s First Polio Clinic
  Recognizing  the urgency to address the polio epidemic, Dr. B.C. Roy took the initiative to  establish a polio hospital and clinic in Calcutta. Initially, this endeavor was  a non-official undertaking, with Dr. Roy personally procuring the necessary  equipment from within the country and abroad. The hospital, named the  "B.C. Roy Polio Clinic," was inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal  Nehru, who commended the association of Dr. Roy`s name with the institution, acknowledging  his immense contributions to the field of medicine.

  Dr.  B.C. Roy`s dedication to public welfare extended beyond West Bengal. He served  as the first President of the All India Medical Council, actively participating  in its meetings. He was also closely associated with the Kamala Nehru Hospital  in Allahabad, which was established in memory of Jawaharlal Nehru`s wife. In  Bengal, Dr. Roy played a pivotal role in the inception of the Jadavpur  Tuberculosis Hospital and the Kancharapara Hospital for Tuberculosis. His  tireless efforts also led to the development of the Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, a  prominent maternity hospital in India, and the Victoria Institution in  Calcutta. Dr. Roy`s contributions further extended to the advancement of  engineering and technical education in West Bengal, notably the Jadavpur  Engineering College and Technological Institute.
